User Research: Summary

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to gain perspective of potential user groups’ goals and frustrations.

One primary user group identified were young professionals who prioritize efficiency and reliability.  Another user group identified were parents or other caretakers who depend on organization and convenience.

User Research: Pain Points

1

Time

Working caretakers often do not have the time nor energy to prepare meals.

2

Memory

Different members of the family or office have different dietary preferences and restrictions.

3

Accessibility

Not every food app has the necessary accessibility features required - this often dictates purchasing decisions.

Competitive Audit

An audit of both direct and indirect competitors was conducted to identify their strengths and weaknesses and address opportunities for the City Bakery app.

Ideation

I did the ideation exercise “Crazy Eights” to come up with ideas for how to address the gaps and opportunities identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on  recent orders and saved orders features.

Paper Wireframes

I created about 5 paper wireframes for each of the screens in my use case.

Digital Wireframes

After ideating and drafting paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the City Bakery app. The designs focused on ease of use and being able to quickly re-order saved and past orders.

Easily edit the location and time of pickup

Quickly find Saved and Past Orders.

Low-fidelity Prototype

To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that connected the main user flow of adding items to your cart from the menu, saved orders page, and past orders page.

Usability Study: Parameters

Study Type:

Moderated Usability Study

Location:

United States, Remote

Participants:

5 Participants

Length:

15-20 Minutes

Usability Study: Findings

1

Quick Add

All users indicated that a quick add feature is desirable.

2

Quantity Edit

All users suggested a drop down menu to edit quantity from cart or an “x” or trash can icon to remove an item.

3

Features

All users saved time using the “saved orders” and “past orders” features.

Results

Based on insights from the usability study, I applied design changes like a way to easily edit the quantity of the items in the cart.

Before Usability Study
After Usability Study

Also based on the study, I added a quick add feature so users wouldn’t have to go through extra screens to add the standard item to their cart.

High-Fidelity Prototype

The high fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including the design changes made after the usability study. View the City Bakery high fidelity prototype here.

Accessibility Considerations

1

Clear labels for interactive elements that can be read by screen readers.

2

Testing included one individual with color blindness.

Takeaways

Impact:

Users shared that the app was easy to use and that they would use the app to save time.

What I learned:

Because this project was the first UX project I completed, I learned so much. Specifically about the importance of usability testing. I was surprised to see the users go about the problem in a different way I had assumed they would.

Next Steps

Conduct Research on customer turnover through the app.

Conduct further studies for in-demand features.

Research ways to make app more accessible.
